SSWARS was established in order to work towards meeting its objectives. The objectives of SSWARS are 15-fold as below:
- To contribute to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by soliciting for funding from government and development partners; and implementing projects for improvement of water and sanitation coverage in the areas of operation,
- To advocate government and other development partners for the provision of sustainable sanitation and water supply systems,
- To promote sanitation systems that are cheap and sustainable, and protect the environment from pollution,
- To promote water supply systems that are simple and cheap to construct, operate and maintain,
- To train communities to manage their water and sanitation systems in a sustainable manner,
- To encourage civil society to participate in water and sanitation development efforts initiated by the government,
- To lobby and advocate government for the purpose of fighting corruption and abuse of offices amongst the civil societies, civil servants and civic leaders in the water and sanitation sector,
- To encourage civil society and their leaders at various levels to observe gender equity in water and sanitation initiatives,
- To observe and encourage society to undertake environmental programs initiated by government,
- To develop and implement water and sanitation systems that can be easily used and operated by the elderly, the children and disabled persons in society,
- To observe strictly the rights of women and children in the provision of water and sanitation systems,
- To uplift the economic status of women and youths in the areas of operation,
- To identify impediments to developments in the areas of operation and formulate project proposals designed to bring about development,
- To fight Poverty, Ignorance & Disease in the areas of operation,
- To do other things which are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objectives.
